The Ford Mustang GTD Set A Nürburgring Record
It’s the King of the Ring! Probably.
Ford has released a trailer for a short film that’s debuting on December 10 chronicling its attempt to break the Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record for American cars. The current mark for the 13-mile-long circuit was set by a Dodge Viper ACR in 2017 at 7:01.3
“When we introduced Mustang GTD, the target for the project was clear – build the fastest road-going Mustang ever to set a targeted sub-7-minute lap time at the Nürburgring,” a Ford spokesman said.
“On December 10, Ford will show exactly what the Mustang GTD can do with ‘Road to the Ring,’ a 14-minute film appearing on Ford’s official YouTube channel and Ford.com.”

Seeing how it’s unlikely Ford would be making such an announcement if it failed, it’s safe to assume that it achieved its goal and broke the seven-minute mark.

The video, which features Ford CEO Jim Farley among the speakers, reveals that Ford Performance endurance racer Dirk Müller piloted the 815 hp car for the record attempt.
The black coupe is seen being lowered on its dual-spring suspension setup into track mode and engaging its drag reduction system as it tackles the twisty road course.
Full details on the Mustang GTD’s performance have not been released, but Ford has confirmed that it has a 202 mph top speed in the low drag setting and has a starting price of $325,000.

As for how long the lap record will last, it might not be that long at all. Chevrolet has been testing the upcoming 1,064 hp Corvette ZR1 at the Nürburgring, although it hasn’t made any proclamations about lap times.
The ZR1 has claimed a 233 mph top speed record for sports cars from major American automakers, however, with GM President Mark Reuss behind the wheel.

Unfortunately for American sports car fans, this is a two-horse race as Dodge isn’t planning to introduce a new Viper or something similar anytime soon.
