Lucky sevens!

The Ford Mustang GTD has become the first production car from an American brand to lap Germany’s Nürburgring Nordscheife in fewer than seven minutes.

The $325,000 version of the seventh-generation Mustang hit the track on Aug. 7 with Ford Performance racing driver Dirk Müller behind the wheel and came home with a lap time of 6:57.685.

That beat the Dodge Viper ACR’s record of 7:01.3 set in 2017, but Ford thinks it has more in the tank.

There was rain early in the day of the attempt and less than optimal conditions as things dried up enough for Müeller to put in his hottest lap. Ford said it will be returning to the track when the weather is better to go for an even better time.

The Mustang GTD is a collaboration with racing outfit Multimatic and features a 815 hp supercharged 5.2-liter V8, a drag reduction system and a suspension with two sets of springs that can be compressed to lower the car and increase the spring rate for track driving. Ford released a short documentary called “The Road to the Ring” on YouTube, which chronicles the effort behind the record run.

As it stands, only a handful of cars have put in better lap times at the Nürburgring, including the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, and the $3 million Mercedes-AMG One, which has a 1,049 hp drivetrain and posted a 6:29 minute lap this year.

Ford didn’t say exactly when it will be heading back, but another American car might get there first to challenge its mark. If it hasn’t done so already.
