Jeep has made a quick shift in strategy.

The automaker in September announced that the 2025 Wrangler would no longer be offered with a V6 and automatic transmission. If you wanted that engine, you’d have to get it with a stick-shift manual.

The brand got a new boss around the same time that unusual decision was announced, and he’s apparently been checking out the suggestion box since then.

“In response to enthusiastic requests, we’re reintroducing the eight-speed automatic transmission for V6 Wrangler models, underscoring our commitment to freedom of choice, performance, and versatility for every adventure,” Bob Broderdorf, senior vice president and head of Jeep brand North America, said in a news release. “We deeply value our community’s passion and input.”

The order books for Wrangler’s with the 285 hp V6 and eight-speed automatic are now opened, but the stick-shift is still available. In fact, if you want a Wrangler with a manual transmission, that’s still the only way to go.

The other options include a 270 hp turbocharged four-cylinder with the automatic, a 470 hp V8 with the automatic and the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid that combines the four-cylinder with an electric motor and battery that can propel the vehicle up to 21 miles between charges and also helps improve its fuel efficiency in hybrid mode.

Jeep Wrangler sales were down 11% through the first three quarters of this year. It outsold the Ford Bronco during the period, but its sales are down from all-time highs before the new Bronco was launched in 2021.

Jeep also announced in September that the 2025 Gladiator pickup, which is closely related to the Wrangler, would no longer be offered with the stick-shift option and it’s sticking with that decision … for now.
