Retired NASCAR star Kurt Busch will represent the USA at the Race of Champions in Sydney, Australia, in his first race since suffering a concussion at Pocono Raceway in 2022. Busch will team with rally car driver Travis Pastrana in the all-star event.

The Race of Champions pits drivers from around the world in a series of races held on a temporary road course-style track built inside of a stadium.

This year’s event is taking place at Accor Stadium, which was the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies and track and field events for the 2000 Summer Olympics and normally hosts Australian rules football and cricket today.

Busch has previously appeared in the Race of Champions twice and finished second in the 2017 Nations Cup event with his brother Kyle against a German team comprised of Formula One drivers Sebastian Vettel and Pascal Wehrlein.

“Race car drivers always push the limits to the best, and drive to win,” Busch said in a press releaase. “That is what I have strived for my whole career, and to receive another invite from Race Of Champions is a chance to go up against the best from around the world. What an honor! Thank you, ROC. Team USA!”

Busch’s NASCAR career was cut short in 2022 after he suffered a concussion during a qualifying crash at Pocono. He officially announced his retirement from the series in August 2023. The 46-year-old has been medically cleared to compete at the Race of Champions, which involves much slower speeds than NASCAR and no contact between cars that race in divided lanes.
