Martin Truex Jr. And Jimmie Johnson Enter 2025 Daytona 500
Semi-retired NASCAR drivers Martin Truex Jr. and Jimmie Johnson have officially signed up to attempt to qualify for the 2025 Daytona 500.
Truex will be driving an unchartered Toyota Camry run by Tricon Garage, which is primarily a Truck Series team and will be making its Cup Series debut at Daytona, so he will need to qualify into the starting lineup.
Truex retired from full-time driving at the end of the 2024 season, but said he’ll be doing select races in various series in the future. The 2017 Cup Series champion has never won the Daytona 500, so it’s a box he’d still like to check off.
He almost did it in 2016 when he came in second just .01 seconds behind Denny Hamlin in the second-closest Daytona 500 finish.

“This opportunity is a testament to the dedication of our entire organization and our partners at Toyota. Having raced against Martin for many years, I can confidently say there’s no stronger competitor I’d want behind the wheel for our first Cup Series entry at the sport’s most prestigious race,” Tricon owner David Gilliland said.
“As an open entry, we know the road ahead will be challenging, but I have no doubt that Martin will put us in the best position to succeed. I’ve had the privilege of sitting on the pole at Daytona, but my next goal is to celebrate in Victory Lane.”

Tricon won’t be the only team making its Cup Series debut at Daytona. Dale Earnhardt’s JR Motorsports is stepping up from the Xfinity Series with a car for defending Xfinity series champion Justin Allgaier.
Johnson will be driving for the Legacy Motor Club team that he co-owns in the No. 84 Toyota Camry and is also entering the Coca-Cola 600. He has previously won the Daytona 500 twice and the Coca-Cola 600 four times.
