The streak begins.

The Tesla Model Y was the best selling vehicle in the world for the second consecutive year in 2024, Elon Musk announced during the automaker’s earnings call on Wednesday.

The Model Y first achieved the feat in 2023 with 1.2 million deliveries, putting it ahead of the Toyota Rav4 and Toyota Corolla.

Musk didn’t say exactly how many Model Ys were sold last year, but Tesla’s overall sales dropped 1.1% to 1.79 million. Tesla delivered 372,613 Model Ys in the U.S., according to Cox Automotive, making it the sixth-best selling vehicle in the market. Tesla is currently taking orders for a redesigned Model Y that is scheduled to begin U.S. deliveries in March.

Musk didn’t have anything to say about any other new vehicles that are supposed to be going on sale this year, including a new entry-level model, but did say that Tesla will be launching a driverless ride-hail service in Austin, Tex., this June and expects to expand it to California later in 2025. He also thinks it will be possible to roll it out across the entire U.S. in 2026 if regulations allow it.

Musk also reiterated his previous position that Tesla has “a path” to become the most valuable company in the world, that’s primarily to its autonomous technology and the Optimus humanoid robot that he said will be manufactured in the thousands by the end of the year for internal use by Tesla.
