Jerry Seinfeld Made $22 Million Selling His Old Porsches Once
Jerry Seinfeld passed up a big payday.
The billionaire comedian owns the 1969 Porsche 917K that was featured in the Steve McQueen film “Le Mans” and offered it at the Mecum Auctions event in Kissimmee, Florida, on January 18.
The bidding reached $25 million, but the amount didn’t meet the undisclosed reserve price that Seinfeld put on the car, so there was no sale. However, the renowned collector has made a few bucks selling his cars before.
In 2016, Seinfeld put 17 of his Porsches up for sale at the Gooding & Co. auction in Amelia Island, Fla., and they went for some eye-popping amounts.

The top model was a rare 1955 550 Spyder similar to the one that James Dean was killed in. Only about 90 were built. Seinfeld’s still had its original paint and interior trim and sold for $5,335,000.
There were also several racing cars, including a 1973 917/30 Can-Am Spyder that sold for $3,000,000, a 1974 911 Carrera 3.0 IROC RSR for $2,310,000 and a 1990 962C for $1,650,000. Along with the sales of a $125,000 Volkswagen Beetle and $99,000 VW Camper van, Seinfeld took home a total of $22,243,500.

Seinfeld hasn’t said if or when he plans to try to sell the 917K that he’s owned since 2001 again, or what price he has in mind. The car had previously been auctioned the year before for $1.3 million, but Seinfeld purchased it privately for an unknown amount.

An identical car that was used for stunt work on the film was auctioned in 2017 for $14 million, but Seinfeld’s is the “hero” car used for the close-up photography with McQueen and it still has the camera mounting points installed.
