Someone Paid $990,000 For A 1977 Ford F-150 ‘Hoonitruck’ And It Was A Good Deal
And you thought new trucks were expensive today!
A custom drifting pickup commissioned by the late Ken Block nicknamed the Hoonitruck was sold at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale, Ariz., auction for $990,000.
The 1977 Ford F-150 is really just a shell of its former self. The modified body is wrapped around a custom tube frame chassis that’s equipped with a 914 hp version of the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 from Ford’s GT LM racing car.
Power gets to the wheels through a six-speed all-wheel-drive system and a drift brake is installed to stop the rears to help the truck get sideways. A carbon fiber dashboard recreates the style of the original piece.

The build was done by the Detroit Speed shop and the project two two years and a reported $1.5 million to complete in 2018. Block used it for his Gymkhana YouTube video series then sold it himself in 2021, two years before he was killed in a snowmobile accident on his ranch in Utah.

The truck was listed for $1.1 million at the time, but the exact sale price was not announced. In any event, the $990,000 paid at Barrett-Jackson is a relative deal.

However, while 914 hp sounds like a lot of power for a pickup, there’s a way to get even more than that into a Ford truck that’s a lot easier than building a Hoonitruck.

Ford has announced a new supercharged 7.3-liter V8 Megazilla 2.0 crate motor that cranks out more than 1,000 hp is going on sale through the Ford Performance catalog late this year. Pricing hasn’t been confirmed, but based on similar engines, it should be in the $30,000 range and is designed to easily install into a Ford, but isn’t street legal and is only for track or off-road use. Which also applies to the Hoonitruck.
