Official: The Tesla Model Y Was The World’s Best Selling Vehicle In 2024 With 1.09 Million Sold

The Tesla Model Y has gone back to back as the world’s best selling car.

Elon Musk made the proclamation during Tesla’s latest earnings call in January, but didn’t provided exact figures to back it up. However, an independent authority has now confirmed the results.

Automotive intelligence firm Focus2Move has counted 1.09 million sales for the Model Y, which was a drop of 1.2% from 2023.

That put it just ahead of the Toyota Corolla’s 1.08 million sales, which was followed by the Toyota Rav4 at 1.02 million and the Ford F-Series at 903,454.

Focus2Move’s chart had the same order in 2023, which was different from another closely watched ranking from JATO Dynamics. JATO had the Model Y on top at 1.223 million in 2023, the Rav4 at 1.075 million, the Honda CR-V at 846,000 and the Corolla at 803,000. JATO has not yet finalized its results for 2024.

Along with taking the global title, the Model Y was the sixth-best selling vehicle in the U.S. with 372,613, according to Cox Automotive. That put it behind the F-Series, the Chevrolet Silverado, the Rav4, the CR-V and the Ram Pickup.

As far as Tesla’s chances for a three-peat are concerned, it has a plus and a minus this year. It just revealed an updated Model Y with new styling, improved performance and the latest tech, but it needs to retool its factories to build it, which will constrain production temporarily.

The order books for the New Model Y are now open in the U.S. with the first deliveries scheduled for March.
