The Tesla Model Y was the best selling car in the world in 2024, just beating out the Toyota Corolla 1.09 million to 1.08 million according to one study, but the drubbing was much worse in California.

Tesla California New Car Dealers Association reports that Tesla sold 128,923 Model Ys in the state last year, which was nearly twice that of the Toyota Rav4 in second with 65,041.

The Model Y’s result represented a small drop from the 132,636 sold in 2023, while the Rav4 was up from 58,496.

Last year’s California top 5 rounded out with the Honda CR-V at 49,990, the Chevrolet Silverado at 37,655 and the Ford F-Series at 36,546.

The Tesla Model 3 was the second-best selling electric vehicle in California again, but saw a dramatic reduction in deliveries from 82,786 in 2023 to 53,056.

Tesla’s global sales were down 1.1% in 2024 led by the Model Y’s 1.2% drop. It only officially reports sales quarterly, but reports out of Europe suggest 2025 hasn’t started off very rosy. Estimates say they are down 13% across the continent with Germany and France leading the way at -59% and -61%, respectively. A New Model Y was just unveiled in January, however, and the full effects of the changeover on supply and demand are not yet clear.

The New Model Y — which is being sold with that full name alongside versions of the original — debuts in the U.S. in a Launch Series trim priced at $59,990 before destination fees. It has refreshed exterior and interior styling, new screens for the front and rear passengers, plus an updated chassis that’s been redesigned to improve the ride quality and refinement.

The all-wheel-drive powertrain is good for 320 miles of range and a 0-60 mph time of 4.1 seconds. It is currently available for orders with deliveries scheduled to being in March.
