Subaru’s best selling vehicle in the U.S. is about to get better … fuel economy.

Subaru has revealed the first hybrid version of the Forester compact SUV it has ever offered at the Chicago Auto Show.

The all-new sixth-generation Forester launched for the 2025 model year and is made in Japan, but is one of those import models that’s too important for American Cars And Racing to ignore.

The Forester Hybrid combines a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter flat-four-cylinder engine with electric drive and a continuously variable automatic transmission.

Subaru also debuted the upcoming 2026 Forester Wilderness, which is the most off-road capable model in the lineup. It’s not available as a hybrid and comes with the 180 hp engine. Its suspension and all-wheel-drive system are specially tuned for off-roading and its ground clearance is increased from 8.7 inches to 9.3 inches. It features unique bumpers and body cladding, extra underbody protection, Yokohama Geolandar all-terrain tires on 17-inch wheels and durable StarTex synthetic upholstery. Pricing for the Forester Wilderness will be announced closer to when deliveries begin this fall.
