The Toyota Tacoma is America’s best-selling midsize pickup, so when something goes wrong it goes wrong in a big way.
The automaker has announced that it is recalling approximately 106,000 of the trucks because of an issue with their rear brakes. The Tacoma was fully redesigned for 2024 and one of the major changes from the previous generation was the switch from rear drum to rear disc brakes.
The issue affects four-wheel-drive trucks equipped with 17-inch wheels and what Toyota refers to as a 16-inch brake package. That’s not a reference to the rotor size, but rather the position of the brake caliper. The recall notices says that the small clearance between the brake hoses and the inside of the wheel rim may allow dirt to build up in the space, which could wear the hoses and cause a leak.
Toyota has redesigned the hoses and will install the new ones for free under warranty. Affected owners will be contacted starting on March 24, but can also check www.toyota.com/recall to see if their vehicle is on the list. The automaker is investigating other wheel and brake combinations to see if any of them have a similar issue.
