So, when are they going to race?

Chevrolet took the wraps off of its version of the NASCAR electric demonstrator at Daytona International Speedway on Thursday.

The Blazer EV.R features styling inspired by the production Blazer EV SS that will serve as the pace car for the Daytona 500.

NASCAR last year unveiled the demonstrator, which features the styling of a generic crossover SUV. It is built on the same chassis as the Cup Series cars, but powered by a tri-motor drivetrain that can be turned up to more than 1,300 hp.

“While we will continue to race our proven and winning V8 technology in NASCAR for years to come, we continually look for ways to improve the combination of power, durability, and efficiency to transfer learnings from the racetrack to the showroom, especially as we bolster Chevy’s consumer EV lineup,” Eric Warren, executive director, global motorsports competition for General Motors said in a press release.

Ford revealed one that looks like a Mustang Mach-E in January, NASCAR has no current plans to launch an electric racing series. Nevertheless, with three cars floating around an exhibition race could be fun to see. Testing indicates that its 78-kWh battery pack could provide around 45 mins of racing on a short oval track, where regenerative braking would help charge the battery during a race.

The Blazer EV.R was tested at Carolina Motorsports park alongside the NASCAR prototype and the Ford. NASCAR’s third manufacturer, Toyota, confirmed to American Cars And Racing that it is not working on one of its own.
