Buick was ranked the top mass market and American brand in the 2025 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study just three points behind overall leader Lexus. The study surveys consumer satisfaction with their vehicles after three years of ownership.

With the industry average at 202 problems per 100 vehicles, Lexus scored 140 and Buick 143. They were followed by Mazda (161) and Toyota (162), while Cadillac tied with Chevrolet (169).

GMC was the only other U.S.-based brand ranked above average at 181. Ford (208), Lincoln (221), Ram (242), Jeep (275) and Chrysler (282) rounded out the rest of the American makes. Tesla was given an unofficial score of 209 as it does not provide all of the data required for the study, while the startups Rivian and Lucid didn’t have high enough sales in 2022 to provide a large enough pool.

The survey covers 184 problem areas, which include owner dissatisfaction with design and operation along with reliability. The average score was the lowest since 2009, which J.D. Power says was a result of supply chain issues that hit the industry in 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and semiconductor chip shortage.

“While the increase in problems this year may be a thorn in the side of automakers and owners, it’s important to remember that today’s three-year-old vehicles were built during a time when the industry was grappling with major disruptions,” Jason Norton, director of auto benchmarking at J.D. Power, said in a news release. “Supply chain issues, record-high vehicle prices, and personnel disruption in the wake of the pandemic were problematic.”
