The Chevrolet Camaro nameplate has been out of production since the end of 2023 and a new report suggests its return is far from imminent.

Insider sources told Ford Authority that a recent proposal for the Camaro’s revival was “blown apart” by executives because the volume and profitability targets didn’t make a strong enough business case.

Chevrolet hasn’t officially confirmed that it is even working on a seventh generation Camaro, although GM President Mark Reuss has suggested that the name could come back on an affordable electric sports car.

Ford Authority’s sources didn’t provide any technical details about the car that is under consideration. Ford is sticking with internal combustion for the two-door Mustang while Dodge will soon be launching the Charger Sixpack with a turbocharged straight-six-cylinder engine and hasn’t ruled out bringing back V8 engines for the model.

The good news for Camaro and American sports car fans is that GM is even considering re-entering the pony car segment, and the latest setback doesn’t mean it’s giving up.

“It’s still in play, but the light at the end of the tunnel is now dimmer,” a Ford Authority source added.

Chevrolet allowed the sixth-generation Camaro to wither on the vine before it died as a 2024 model. Aside from some styling and trim tweaks, its last major update was the launch of the top-of-the-line 650 hp Camaro ZL1 in 2017. In its last couple of years on sale, it was outsold by the Mustang, Challenger and even the more expensive mid-engine Corvette.

The Camaro lives on in spirit, however, as it is still Chevrolet’s entry in the NASCAR Cup Series and Xfinity Series, where it can continue to compete without updates until Chevy or GM replaces it with body inspired by another production car.

The only car Chevy currently builds is the mid-engine Corvette, while GM’s only other cars are the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 sedans, so it is unclear when or if an update might happen. William Byron drove a Camaro to victory at the 2025 Daytona 500, which was is second consecutive win in The Great American Race.

Chevrolet did unveil the Blazer EV.R electric NASCAR demonstrator at Daytona, however, which wears the body of a crossover utility vehicle. Ford recently built a similar car that looks like the Mustang Mach-E and both suggest that NASCAR is considering a switch to the body style, if not the electric powertrain, for one of its series.
