Chase Briscoe started the NASCAR season at the front, but now he’ll have to work his way from the back.

The Daytona 500 pole sitter has been penalized a massive 100 points after his car failed a post-race inspection.

Briscoe finished fourth in The Great American Race, but its mostly for naught as the penalty puts him at -67 points and dead last in the standings. He’ll also lose 10 playoff points if he makes it to the postseason, which will be easiest to accomplish now with a win. Briscoe’s crew chief was hit with a four-race suspension.

The violation was for modification to a part supplied by NASCAR that is not allowed to be changed by the teams, namely the rear spoiler mount.

Joe Gibbs Racing will appeal the decision and told Fox Sports that the pre-drilled holes in the spoiler were damaged during assembly by the bolts, which are also supplied to all teams.

Briscoe has two wins in his Cup Series career, both coming with the now-defunct Stewart-Haas Racing team. He and the rest of the Cup Series field will be back in action in Atlanta on Sunday, Feb. 23.
