NASCAR: Chase Briscoe’s 100-Point Penalty Overturned By Appeals Board

Chase Briscoe is back in the title chase!
Joe Gibbs Racing driver Briscoe was penalized 100 points after the Daytona 500 for a technical infraction, but the National Motorsports Appeals Panel has now rescinded the devastating sanction.
Briscoe’s car failed a post-race inspection when it was discovered that the bolt holes for the rear spoiler were larger than allowed. The part is common to all NASCAR Cup Series cars and no modifications are allowed.
However, his team argued that the supplied bolts caused the damage during regular use, not anything it did intentionally.

“The panel believes that the elongation of some of the holes on the No. 19 Cup car spoiler base is caused by the process of attaching that specific spoiler base to the rear deck and not the modification of the single source part,” the panel said in a statement, agreeing with the defense.
Lifting the penalty moved Briscoe from dead last in the standings at -28 points to 15th with 72 points. A $100,000 fine was also overturned.
The news comes on the same day that NASCAR fined Austin Cindric 50 points for spinning Ty Dillon during the race at the Circuit Of The Americas on Sunday, which was considered a retaliatory move.
