It may have just been a rubber stamp at this point, but GM and its fans are breathing a sigh of relief as Formula 1 has officially approved the new Cadillac Formula 1 team for entry into the series in 2026.

Cadillac will be the 11th team on the grid as the series launches a new generation of cars. It will use Ferrari powertrains for at least the first two seasons, but the automaker has created GM Performance Power Units to develop its own with an eye on having it ready for 2028.

“Today marks a transformative moment, and I am proud to lead the Federation in this progressive step for the championship,” FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said in a news release. “The FIA Formula One Championship’s expansion to an 11th team in 2026 is a milestone. GM/Cadillac brings fresh energy, aligning with the new FIA 2026 regulations and ushering in an exciting era for the sport.

“The Cadillac Formula 1 Team’s presence in the paddock will inspire future competitors and fans. Their entry strengthens our mission to push motorsport’s boundaries at the highest level.”

The team is a collaboration between GM and the U.S.-bsed TWG Motorsports, which controls Andretti Global, and will be the first American full works team. Ford will also be entering F1 in 2026, but only as a powertrain partner to Red Bull, while the Haas F1 Team also uses Ferrari powertrains, but has no ambitions to build its own.

“We’re thrilled the Cadillac Formula 1 Team is official, as the team has been accelerating its work,” GM President Mark Reuss said. “We’re incredibly grateful for the support from the FIA and Formula One Management leadership for us and for our collaboration with TWG. The excitement only grows as we get closer to showcasing GM’s engineering expertise on the prestigious global stage of F1.”

The next big step will be the announcement of a driver lineup. GM has kept the candidates close to the vest, but Andretti IndyCar driver Colton Herta is expected to be among those being considered as the team is hopeful to put an American driver on the grid. It’s likely they would be paired with an F1 veteran who will be able to help the new team’s development.
