Ford may be launching an off-road version of the Mustang in the coming years, but you don’t have to wait if you want one.

German custom car builder Loder1899 has revealed plans for a safari-style Mustang convertible inspired by the modified 1967 Shelby GT350-based build featured in the Pierce Brosnan-led “The Thomas Crown Affair” of 1999. The film’s title character was a billionaire who stole valuable art works for fun.

The company says it “combines classic Shelby design with modern off-road performance” although the car in the rendered images is wearing Mustang Dark Horse badges.

Upgrades include wheel arch flares, an off-road suspension and a large all-terrain wheel and tire package. There are also auxiliary fog lights up front, a light bar over the cabin and a trunk-mounted tire carrier for the oversized rubber.

Loder1899 didn’t specify the engine or its output, but there are myriad options available from Ford and it’s many certified performance parts suppliers, including Shelby American.

The company said it will build it if there is enough demand. Pricing is unknown. Its previous upgrade parts for street Mustangs were available at relatively low prices in the 100s and 1,000s, but something like the Thomas Crown Mustang would require a significant amount of pricey mechanical work.

As for the factory Ford version, it hasn’t officially been confirmed, but CEO Jim Farley reportedly showed one to dealers last August and in february said that an off-road supercar is under consideration.

Brands like Porsche and Lamborghini have recently found success with rugged versions of their sports cars in the form of the Porsche 911 Dakar and Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato, which both sold for more than $200,000.

Ford already has an off-road model that wears the Mustang name, but it is the electric Mustang Mach-E Rally SUV.
