Tesla Just Killed The Old Model Y

Out with the old, in with the new.

Tesla has stopped taking orders for the first generation Model Y, which has been offered alongside the updated New Model Y since January.

All of the original design’s trims have been removed from the Tesla ordering website, although many of them are still available in inventory.

For now, the only New Model Y available is the loaded-up Launch Series, which has a starting price of
$61,630 including destination fees and qualifies for the still-in-effect $7,500 federal tax credit on EV purchases.

It is a top of the line trim with a Long Range All-Wheel Drive powertrain and an EPA rating of 327 miles per charge. Tesla says it can accelerate to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and has a top speed of 125 mph.

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving feature is standard along with a tow package rated for 3,500 pounds. Dark grey, white, red and silver paint colors are all available at no added cost.

Tesla hasn’t indicated when lower priced trims will be added back into the lineup, but there could be a very inexpensive one on the way.

Tesla has promised to launch a new entry-level model this year that is expected to be based on the Model Y platform and is rumored to be known as Model Q, but timing hasn’t been publicly confirmed. New reports from China suggest a Model Y with very basic content is in the works, but it is not clear if they are one in the same vehicle.

Tesla last year debuted an entry-level version of the Model 3 in Mexico with cloth seats, no rear screen and a few other features missing that helped cut around $4,000 from the previous lowest price.
