General Motors Is Beating Everyone Including Tesla With China’s Best Selling Car

GM’s tiniest car is a big seller.
The smallest model General Motors offers in the U.S. these days is the Buick Encore GX, but it has one in China that makes it look like a monster truck.
The electric Hong Guang MINIEV is a model line built by GM’s joint-venture operation Wuling that includes a two-door, a two-door convertible and a four-door model that was recently launched.
The cars are 10-feet long, give or take, which is about a foot shorter than a Fiat 500e. They’re also very low power, with a maximum output of 40 hp that gets them to a top speed of 62 mph. Driving ranges are similarly limited, just 75-110 miles per charge, depending on the battery size. However, they have small prices to match and list for $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the trim.
The value proposition and introduction of an updated version this year helped propel the Hong Guang MINIEV to the top of the charts in China with 31,222 sold, according to China Passenger Car Association data reported on by GM Authority.

That put it ahead of its $10,000 Chinese rival, the Geely Geome Xingyuan, which racked up 24,831 sales, and all of Tesla’s models combined, which accounted for 26,777. The Hong Guang MINIEV is also the best seller so far in 2025 with 56,146 deliveries. Unfortunately for American bargain shoppers, the Hong Guang MINI EV was not designed to meet U.S. safety standards and there are no plans to offer it here.

But the lowest-priced GM model available in the U.S. is no slouch. The $21,495 Chevrolet Trax is a well-regarded subcompact SUV that is the lowest-priced vehicle currently sold by a U.S. brand and one of Chevy’s best-sellers.
