The Tesla Cybertruck is facing a total recall due to a defect that has led to parts peeling off the pickup, which could pose a danger to other vehicles and pedestrians.

The cant rail, which is a cosmetic panel that runs along the roofline above the doors, may detach, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The non-structural stainless steel panel is affixed to the pickup using fasteners and adhesive that is “susceptible to environmental embrittlement.” An investigation into the issue found that the panel may delaminate at the adhesive joint, which could lead to it being peeled away from the body.

“A delaminated cant rail panel may create a detectable noise inside the cabin,” the NHTSA recall report said. “Separately, the customer may observe the cant rail panel coming loose or separating from the vehicle.”

Tesla said that 151 warranty claims related to the problem have been filed. All 46,096 Cybertrucks built from November 13, 2023, to February 27, 2025 are subject to the recall.

“The remedy component uses a different structural adhesive not prone to environmental embrittlement to join the assembly, which is reinforced with a stud welded to the stainless panel with a nut clamping the steel panel to the vehicle structure,” the recall notice said.

Tesla is expected to apply the updated manufacturing method to new vehicle assembly starting on March 21 and previously built trucks that have not yet been sold will undergo the recall work before being delivered.

The Cybertruck has previously been recalled to secure a plastic panel along the bed rail and also the footpad on the accelerator pedal, both of which could come loose prior to the fixes.
