Rare 1993 GMC Typhoon Sold For Record $226,000!

Move over, Buick GNX!
A 1993 GMC Typhoon with just 688 miles on the odometer was sold on the Bring A Trailer website for a record $226,000. That beat a previous high sale price of $175,000 set in 2022 for an 272-mile example.
The Typhoon is considered to be the first street performance SUV and was only built for the 1992 and 1993 model years. A total of 4,697 were made, split almost evenly between the two years.
The two-door Typhoon was based on the GMC Jimmy and came powered by a 280 hp turbocharged 4.3-liter V6 driving all four wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission, full-time BorgWarner transfer case and limited-slip rear differential.

According to GMC, it could accelerate to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds, which was quicker than a contemporary Pontiac Trans Am, thanks in part to its four-wheel-drive traction. Unfortunately, it was not rated to tow, so its utility was minimal.

The price when new was $29,530, which would be around $65,000 today. GMC no longer makes a body-on-frame small SUV that offers a modern comparison.

What the auction price does bring to mind, however, is the Buick GNX muscle car, which was another limited edition turbocharged muscle machine that often sells for similar amounts.

However, we’re going to have to keep an eye out for any GMC Syclone pickups that cross the block. The two-door truck built from 1991-1993 shared its powertrain with the Typhoon, but was lighter and could beat it in a quarter-mile 13.4 seconds to 14.1 seconds.

Just 2,998 Syclones were sold and, according to Classic.com, the highest price ever paid for one stands at $108,000 for a truck with 250 miles on it.
