You’ll have to put your own junk in the Cybertruck’s trunk.

The Tesla Cybertruck launched in 2023 with a Range Extender accessory that was essentially a battery pack installed installed into its bed that increased the vehicle’s overall energy storage capacity. It was priced at $16,000 and took up roughly a third of the cargo capacity.

It was initially advertised as increasing the driving range to 470 miles, but was later reduced to 445 miles. The Cybertruck is not classified as a light duty vehicle so it does not have a formal EPA range or efficiency rating, so the numbers are Tesla estimates.

The Range Extender was priced at $16,000 to order and was designed to be installed at a Tesla service center, but deliveries weren’t scheduled to begin until mid.-2025. Now Tesla has removed it from the Cybertruck website without explanation.

Tesla does not have an active communications department to answer requests for information, and the Cybertruck account on X hasn’t released any updated information on the Range Extender, which required a $2,000 non-refundable deposit to order.

The Range Extender was seen by some as a crutch to help the Cybertruck get closer to the 500-mile range that it was projected to have when it was originally revealed as a concept in 2019. Of the currently available Cybertrucks, the entry level $82,235 All-Wheel Drive has the longest range at 325 miles.

Cybertruck sales fell significantly in the first quarter of 2025 and it is not clear if or when the lineup will be expanded. The IRS list of electric vehicles eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit on purchases was updated this year to include a Single Motor Cybertruck, which could fulfill Tesla’s original promise of a rear-wheel drive model priced at $60,990, which was previously scheduled for launch in 2025, but is no longer listed on the consumer website.
