The 2026 Subaru Outback is down to get dirty.

Subaru has released a teaser image of the all-new model, which is obscured by a large plume of dirt it is kicking up.

The accompanying press release confirms that it will debut at the New York International Auto Show on April 16.

“Building on 30 years of its legendary capability, the next generation of Outback is almost here,” is all the release says.

From what parts of it can be seen, the Outback’s shape appears to have moved even farther from its original wagon body toward the SUV side of the styling spectrum.

No technical details have been revealed, but the Outback is designed on the same platform as the smaller new 2025 Forester, which is the first available with a hybrid powertrain, so it’s likely the Outback will follow suit.

The Outback will continue to be built at Subaru’s Lafayette, Ind., factory. Subaru is discontinuing the Legacy sedan that’s built there at the end of the 2025 model year to help it increase capacity for the Outback, Crosstrek and Ascent that are also manufactured there.

Subaru actually has two separate press conferences scheduled for the New York International Auto Show, so the Outback will likely be accompanied by at least one other new or updated model, but Subaru hasn’t yet said what to expect.
