The Dodge Charger Sixpack Is Going To Sound ‘Gnarly’

Dodge put a lot of effort into making the electric Charger Daytona sound like a muscle car.

Its patented Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust is a complex system of speakers and tubes mounted behind the rear bumper that are meant to create a thunderous sound for the otherwise silent speed machine.

The response to it has been mixed, but it’s definitely induced more than a few grins and Dodge deserves an A for effort.

Now that that’s out of the way, however, it has focused its attention toward putting the finishing touches on the Charger Sixpack, which is an upcoming version of the model powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine.

The motor is already featured in the Ram 1500 and Jeep Wagoneer lines, but the Charger Sixpack will be the first to get one with a 550 hp tune. Dodge has been working on the tune it plays out of its exhaust pipes, which is arguably harder to put on par with a V8 engine’s than the Fratzonic Chambered Exhauast was.

A smooth straight-six inherently sounds different than a V8 and the turbos work to muffle its exhaust. The Ram 1500 RHO, which is the highest performance application of the engine yet, is very quiet and refined, and not even only when compared to the outrageous supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that powered the Ram 1500 TRX. (You can hear it in our recent Ram 1500 RHO review by clicking here.)

Nevertheless, BMW and other automakers have managed to get their inline-sixes to make raucous noises, and that’s exactly what Dodge is aiming to do for internal combustion engine enthusiasts.

“We knew that we had to have an engine for them that would satisfy the performance and hopefully the exhaust that goes with that,” Tyll told American Cars And Racing at the New York International Auto Show.

“We were just in it last week listening to the exhaust note, trying to get that as gnarly as possible,” he said.

“Twin-turbo T-sixes [inline sixes] are an interesting breed, because they have a unique sound that you … if you embrace that sound and then you use the exhaust tuning engineers that we have that have been doing Dodge products, SRT products, turn them loose on a twin-turbo T-six, they can make something that sounds really good.”
