The GMC ‘King Crab’ Hummer EV Is Coming Out Of Its Shell On May 15

GMC unveiled the Hummer EV in 2020 with LeBron “King” James as its spokesperson, but it looks like the electric SUV is about to get a crown of its own.
GMC has released a video teasing a May 15 announcement that declares the Hummer EV “King of the Off-Road” with a what looks like a new feature.
A GMC Hummer EV SUV is shown from above doing donuts in the snow, which likely ties into the “King” reference.
The Hummer EV is currently available with four-wheel steering system and a feature called CrabWalk that allows it to drive diagonally at a 10-degree angle, but General Motors recently filed a trademark request for the term “King Crab” covering “electronic controllers for steering systems for motor land vehicles.”

The crab logo that appears in the teaser video has also been modified from the original with a triangular design that resembles a crown.

The all-wheel-drive Dodge Charger Daytona has a “Donut Mode” that disables the traction control and sends all of the power to the rear wheels. That may be what’s happening with the Hummer in the video, but GMC hasn’t released any additional information and it’s hard to imagine that is the King Crab’s only function.

The exterior styling of the vehicle appears to be unchanged. The first Hummer EV pickups were technically delivered in late 2021, but production of the US-built model line didn’t really ramp up to large volumes until last year when a combined 13,993 pickups and SUVs were delivered, which was up from 3,244 in 2023.

The lowest-priced Hummer EV pickup currently on sale starts at $98,845, but GMC originally planned to eventually introduce models with less content for $79,990. Now that production is steaming along and sales of the Tesla Cybertruck — its top rival in the outrageous electric truck segment — are cratering, it’s possible GMC is aiming to make the Hummer EV the king of the hill on the sales charts.
