The Ford Mustang GTD holds the American lap record for the 12.9-mile Nürburgring Nordschliefe at 6:52.072, but you’ll have to drive it a lot slower than that if you want to make it around the track on one gallon of gas.

The 815 hp super-‘Stang’s official fuel economy rating has been posted ahead of the first deliveries in a few weeks and let’s just say it’s not what you’d call economical with fuel.

The EPA has rated the $325,000 car at 10 mpg city, 17 mpg highway and 12 mpg in combined driving. We won’t try to speculate how much fuel it chugs during a hot lap, but it’s probably a good thing that it has a 16-gallon gas tank.

The last generation Ford Mustang GT500 that used an earlier version of the Mustang GTD’s supercharged 5.2-liter V8 rated at 760 hp was slightly more efficient at 14 mpg, while the hulking Ford F-150 Raptor R that is powered by one tuned to 720 hp matches the Mustang GTD’s 12 mpg.

As it stands, the Mustang GTD is in a tie as the second-least efficient sports car listed by the EPA with the 1,001 hp hybridLamborghini Revuelto behind the $5 million Bugatti Mistral, which is powered by a 1,578 hp and gets 9 mpg combined. But the Mustang GTD could be getting some domestic competition in this category soon.

The upcoming 1,064 hp Chevrolet Corvette ZR1’s official rating has not yet been released, but it uses a twin-turbocharged version of the 670 hp 5.5-liter V8 found in the Corvette Z06, which has a 14 mpg combined rating. That suggests that there’s a very good chance that the ZR1 ends up making the Mustang GTD look like a Mustang Mach-E on the smog charts.

Whatever the ZR1’s rating ends up, hopefully for Chevrolet’s sake it puts the guzzled gas to good use when it puts in a time at the Nürburgring, where small numbers are better.
