The Corvette ZR1 Just Beat The Mustang GTD On Fuel Efficiency, But It’s Still A Gas Guzzler

The 2025 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is keeps racking up wins against its closet domestic rival, the Ford Mustang GTD.
The ZR1 beats the GTD on power (1,064 hp to 815 hp), top speed (233 mph to 202 mph) price ($174,995 to $325,000) and now fuel efficiency.
While not a top priority in the supercar class, the ZR1’s official EPA rating has come in at 14 mpg combined compared to the GTD’s 12 mpg. That’s 17% better, which sounds more impressive. City and highway ratings are 12/18 for the ZR1 and 10/17 for the GTD.
These specifications are the only head-to-head ones available so far. The ZR1 can do a quarter-mile in a blistering 9.6 seconds, but Ford has not released a time for the GTD.

Meanwhile, the GTD holds the American record for a lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife at 6:52.072. Chevrolet has not yet confirmed a time for the ZR1, but has set a number of lap records at several American tracks. The ZR1 has been spotted being tested at the Nürburgring, but the logistics of an official record lap attempt can be tricky. The GTD first broke the seven-minute barrier last year in less than perfect conditions and Ford returned this spring to lower its time by 5.5 seconds on a better day.

Deliveries of the ZR1 and GTD are expected to begin in a few weeks, but neither automaker has confirmed a date for the first shipments or released any information on how many of each model they expect to sell. The ZR1 will be getting a significant change for 2026, however, when the entire Corvette lineup gets a redesigned interior.
