The electric Ford F-150 Lightning co-opted the name of a classic high performance V8-powered model, and it made sense given the power source.

With electric vehicles sales not growing as quickly as expected, it looks like Ford is about to launch a new sporty gas-powered F-150, but with a different name.

Photos of prototypes being tested on public roads published by several outlets, including Motor1, reveal that the model will be called the F-150 Lobo.

This isn’t much of a surprise as Ford launched the street performance Maverick Lobo for the 2025 model year. Ford does sell F-150’s with the Lobo name in Mexico, but it filed for a trademark on the F-150 Lobo name in the U.S. in 2023.

It’s hard to tell from the image what engine powering the truck, although the tips on its its dual rear-exit exhaust pipes don’t look the same as the ones used for the 720 hp supercharged 5.2-liter V8 in the F-150 Raptor R.

The other likely candidates are the F-150 Raptor’s 450 hp turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 or the F-150’s 5.0-liter V8. However, the Ford Performance catalog offers a F-150 FP700S package that includes a supercharger for the V8 that cranks it up to 700 hp.

Unlike the first two generation V8-powered F-150 Lightnings from 1993-1995 and 1999-2004, the F-150 Lobo doesn’t appear to have a significantly lowered ride height, but its fascias and rocker panels are unique. The show version of the FP700S was also not a low rider and neither was the 2014 F-150 Tremor, which was the last street performance trim offered from the factory.

The F-150 Lobo should be a 2026 model year vehicle. Production of the 2025 F-150 began last fall, so you can expect a similar schedule, but Ford has not yet officially announced the launch of. the F-150 Lobo or timing for the 2026 trucks.
