GM Is Dropping $888 Million To Build New V8 Engines

General Motors will be building V8 engines into the next decade at least.
The automaker has confirmed that it is making an $888 million investment in its Tonawanda Propulsion plant near Buffalo, N.Y., to get it ready to manufacture the next generation V8 engines it is developing for its full size trucks and SUVs.
GM said in a news release that the sixth generation V8s will “deliver stronger performance than today’s engines while benefiting fuel economy and reducing emissions,” thanks to innovations in combustion and thermal management.
The engines will be used in The Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban; the GMC Sierra and Yukon; and likely the Cadillac Escalade, which remains is the brand’s best seller as it continues shifting its lineup toward electric models, including the Escalade IQ.

“Our significant investments in GM’s Tonawanda Propulsion plant show our commitment to strengthening American manufacturing and supporting jobs in the U.S.,” Mary Barra, Chair and CEO said in a news release. “GM’s Buffalo plant has been in operation for 87 years and is continuing to innovate the engines we build there to make them more fuel efficient and higher performing, which will help us deliver world-class trucks and SUVs to our customers for years to come.”

Ford last year announced plans for increased V8 engine production, primarily for its F-Series Super duty models, although V8S are also offered in the F-150 lineup, and it looks set to keep building V8-powered Mustangs through 2029 before the next product cycle begins.

Ram discontinued V8s in its light duty pickups for 2025, but is widely expected to reintroduce them for the 2026 model year as the pressure to move toward electrification eases up. The automaker has not formally confirmed or denied the reports, while Dodge is also playing things coy with the possibility of bringing back V8 muscle cars.
The Chevrolet Corvette and Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing are GM’s only other models that feature V8s today.
