New Jersey Is Kicking Tesla’s Superchargers Off Of The NJ Turnpike

The New Jersey Turnpike may be most famous for the oil refineries it passes through, but a different kind of energy has been spreading across it in recent years.

The toll road’s eight rest stops are now home to electric car charging stations. Tesla’s Superchargers were the first to occupy the lots, but they will now be giving way to Applegreen brand chargers.

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority told NJ.com that it’s contract with Tesla is up and that Applegreen, which operates the rest stops, will be taking over, because it “was in the best position to roll-out and manage EV chargers in the service areas.”

Elon Musk said on X that the change sounds like “corruption” but did not offer any evidence to support the statement

Tesla has opened its charging network to other automakers, who have begun supplying customers with adapters and transitioning to the NACS-type plug that Teslas have, but the Turnpike Superchargers are an older model that is not compatible with them (as American Cars And Racing has discovered on several test drives.)

Tesla said that it planned to upgrade the locations and co-locate with the Applegreen chargers, which have CCS-type plugs, but that the New Jersey Turnpike Authority declined.

“We offered the NJTA above-market commercial terms, including offering to build Superchargers at all New Jersey service plaza and with equipment upgrades, such as screens and NACS with CCS1 “magic docks”, the official Tesla Charging X account said in a post.

“Tesla always advocates for more infrastructure and co-location with additional third-party charging providers. This drives down costs through optionality, and accelerates EV adoption by having sufficient capacity to shoulder peaks. We expect that ~30 times more fast-charging capacity is needed to get to full EV adoption.”

Applegreen also operates the rest stops on the Garden State Parkway and is installing chargers there.
