Is there about to be a new American king of the ‘Ring?

Chevrolet has posted a teaser video to the Corvette Instagram account showing either a ZR1 or ZR1X on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

The post is captioned “Fast as green hell,” with green hell being the tricky 12.9-mile track’s nickname.

The 815 Ford Mustang GTD became the first car from an American brand to lap the circuit in less than seven minutes last August with a 6:57.685 lap and then lowered its time this April to 6:52.072.

Several 1,634 hp ZR1s and 1,250 hp ZR1X hybrids have been spotted testing at the Nürburgring in recent months, but this is the first hint that an official time for one or both is now in the books.

The $175,195 ZR1 and (price TBD) ZR1X are virtually identical on the outside, so it’s not possible to confirm which one the yellow car in the video is, but a ZR1X in the same color was recently caught on camera at the track by the Car Spy Media YouTube channel.

The ZR1 already holds lap records at several U.S. tracks that the Mustang GTD has not yet visited and its 233 mph top speed is the highest of any production car from a mainstream U.S. brand. Considering the Corvettes are lighter and significantly more powerful than the Mustang GTD, it’s almost a foregone conclusion that one or both will be faster than it around the Nürburgring and Chevy definitely wouldn’t be posting about it otherwise.

Since the seven-minute barrier has already been broken, breaking the 6:50 mark would be the next bar beyond beating the Mustang GTD’s time. The only four production cars that have done that so far are the Porsche 911 GT3 RS (6:49.328), Mercedes AMG GT Black Series (6:48.047), Porsche 911 GT2 RS with Manthey Performance Kit (6:43.300) and the $2.7 million Mercedes-AMG ONE, which is the only sub-6:30 car at 6:29.090.

Chevy hasn’t given any indication as to when the official news will be released, but the Fourth of July would be a pretty good time to wave the U.S. flag.
