A ‘Days Of Thunder’ Sequel Sounds Like It’s Definitely Happening

If it comes out in 2028 they can call it “38 Years of Thunder Later” — just a thought!
“F1 The Movie” producer Jerry Bruckheimer appeared to confirm a sequel to the 1990 Tom Cruise NASCAR-set film “Days of Thunder” is in the works.
Entertainment Tonight reporter Nischelle Turner was interviewing Bruckheimer at the “F1 The Movie” premiere and said “we heard that you and Tom may be getting back together to do ‘Days of Thunder,'” and then asked him about the things they discussed that they must do in the film.
He responded, “the next one, you mean?”
“There’s always new technologies, always new ways to see things and to do things and Tom is such a great individual, comes up with phenomenal ideas, so we’ll have something very exciting for an audience once we pull it together,” Bruckheimer said.
Rumors about the film have been swirling in recent months, with even NASCAR great Jeff Gordon telling Road & Track the wheels were in motion.
“I mean, all I can say is, I’ve known Tom [Cruise] for many years, and was on set this past year for Mission: Impossible, and then I went to the premiere. And the first words out of his mouth is, ‘We’re doing it. We’re doing “Days of Thunder 2,” Gordon said.
In 2023, a source at Charlotte Motor Speedway told American Cars And Racing that people involved in the potential production had been to the track for scouting purposes, the venue having been used during the filming of the original.
“Days of Thunder” grossed $158 million on a $60 million budget and certified Cruise as a superstar. Cruise on June 27 posted a thread on X celebrating the 35th anniversary of the film’s release.
“I always love the fun and adrenaline of a racing film. Today marks two racing milestones for my friend Jerry Bruckheimer, the release of F1 and the 35 year anniversary to the day of our collaboration with the great Tony Scott on Days of Thunder,” he wrote.
The opening weekend success of “F1 The Movie” has already sparked discussions of a second installment of that story, so more racing films, like a “Days of Thunder” sequel, seem inevitable in the coming years.
