The Toyota Camry has been the best-selling car in the United States for the past 23 years, but the definition of “car” has evolved somewhat over that time.

It used to mean anything that wasn’t a truck, but with the rise of crossover SUVs, it has come to refer more to sedans, coupes hatchbacks and convertibles.

So, even as the Toyota Rav4 became the best-selling vehicle that’s not a pickup in 2017, the Camry remained the best-selling car and the updated 2025 model has kept the lead going this year. There are very good reasons for that.

The Kentucky-built midsize Camry has a starting price of just $29,895. That gets you a standard front-wheel-drive hybrid powertrain that is rated at 51 mpg. It’s roomy, comfortable, rides and handles very well, and has 225 hp, which is more power than you really need. All-wheel-drive costs just $1,525 more and adds an electric motor driving the rear wheels while still delivering 50 mpg. The Camry is also tops in its class for reliability.

The 2025 Camry the kind of car that makes you wonder why every car isn’t exactly like it. If you were designing the perfect midsize sedan that you don’t have to plug in, this would be it and that is why it is our 2025 US-Built Car Of The YearTM.

The Rav4 may be the perfect vehicle that’s not a truck, however, which is why it’s number one in sales. With an all-new all-hybrid Rav4 lineup launching later this year, you’ll want to check back for the 2026 US-Built SUV Of The Year AwardsTM to see how its fares.
