The New Midsize Ram Pickup Will Be A Real TRUCK

It’s no secret that Ram has a new midsize pickup in the works, but what exactly it is remains a mystery.
Ram hasn’t had a midsize model since the Dakota was discontinued in 2011. Instead, it had been directing customers toward its low cost Ram 1500 models, but with the demise of the entry level Ram 1500 Classic last year, the starting price has gone up.
All we know about the new midsize is that it will be launched in 2026 as a 2027 model year vehicle and built at the Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois, where the last generation Cherokee was produced until 2023.

Ram and its sister company Fiat sell several midsize and compact pickups in other countries that all use unibody construction, like the Cherokee, but it looks like the new U.S. truck will have more in common with the Ram 1500.

Sources tell Mopar Insider that the midsize Ram will feature body-on-frame construction, as used by the Ram 1500 and Ram’s heavy duty trucks. Perhaps more relevant, it is also how the midsize Jeep Gladiator is built. The Gladiator’s chassis is something of a hybrid that combines elements from the Jeep Wrangler and Ram 1500.
One thing that likely won’t make it to the midsize Ram is the Gladiator’s solid front axle, which is great for extreme off-roading, but not as refined as the independent setup featured on all of the other midsize pickups it will be competing against. Every one of which is body-on-frame except for the Honda Ridgeline, which is based on the same platform as the Pilot SUV and Odyssey minivan.

Ram will be returning to the NASCAR Truck Series next year with truck-style race car that looks like a two-door pickup, even though it doesn’t actually have doors, or a bed. Ram has not yet secured any teams to race it yet, but is aiming to have at least four of them on the track when the season kicks off in Daytona next February.
