General Motors Just Made Some Huge US-Built Truck News
General Motors will start building internal combustion engine-powered light-duty pickups and the Cadillac Escalade in 2027 at the Orion Assembly plant in Michigan, which was originally slated to start manufacturing electric trucks this year.
GM currently builds its light duty pickups at factories in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, but will be adding Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 production to Orion in an effort to domesticate more trucks when the next-generation models launch in 2027.
GM announced the plan to build internal combustion engine trucks at Orion Assembly instead of electric trucks in June, but has followed up to confirm the models. Electric truck production will remain consolidated at the Factory Zero facility where they are all currently built.
The Escalade is currently manufactured alongside the Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon at a factory in Texas, which will continue producing the trio at higher volumes using the additional capacity made available by the Escalade’s departure.

GM is already the best-selling full-size SUV manufacturer, with the Chevys and Escalade tops in mainstream and luxury segments by wide margins. U.S. trade deals with Canada and Mexico have not been finalized, but are expected to include new tariffs on imported vehicles. Meanwhile, the so-called Big Beautiful Bill that was signed into law by President Trump on July 4 eliminates fines for not meeting corporate average fuel economy standards, which opens the door to an increase in truck production and sales.

GM in June also announced that it was moving production of the Chevrolet Blazer from Mexico to the U.S. in 2027 and adding Chevrolet Equinox production to its Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas, which would supplant the current Mexican-built supply.
