A Chevrolet Corvette Definitely Beat The Mustang GTD’s Nürburgring Time, But Which One?

It looks like the Chevrolet Corvette will be appointed the American king of the Nürburgring on July 31.

Chevrolet posted a video to social media today teasing the long-awaited release of the official Nürburgring Nordschleife lap times for the Corvette, but not just one of them.

“Three Corvettes. Three drivers. One mission. The Nürburgring hot lap results are here,” the caption said.

“We came out here with one goal. And that’s to be the fastest American Supercar that’s ever lapped the Nürburgring. We’re not writing checks for people to drive this car. These are our employees. The big question was always ‘how will the cars perform at the Nürburgring?” And now we are going to answer it. This was it.”

The video reveals that the three cars are the 670 hp Corvette Z06, the 1,064 hp Corvette ZR1 and the 1,250 hp hybrid Corvette ZR1X, none of which have previously posted an official time.

The 815 hp Ford Mustang GTD currently holds the record for American cars at 6:52.072, and Chevy’s proclamation makes it clear that at least one of the cars did better than that. But how much better?

The Mustang GTD’s time seems well within reach of the Corvette ZR1, but the ZR1X doesn’t just have more power, it has all-wheel-drive, which could definitely be beneficial on the twisty circuit.

The all-time production car lap record is currently held by the Mercedes-AMG One at 6:29.090, making it the only car to break the 6:30 barrier. Chevrolet had previously teased the upcoming lap times on June 28, or 6/30, which led many to speculate that it had in fact gone faster than the One, but has been coy about any intentional connection between the numbers.

There’s also the value proposition to consider. The One costs $2.7 million and the Mustang GTD starts at $327,960, which makes the Corvette ZR1 look like a bargain at $175,195. Chevy hasn’t announced ZR1X pricing, but we expect it to be in the neighborhood of $205,000.
