Two Chevrolet Corvettes Just Beat The Mustang GTD’s American Nürburgring Record

Mission accomplished! Chevrolet has claimed a new record for cars from American brands at the Nürburgring Nordschleife … and it did it twice just to be sure.
The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and Corvette ZR1X both posted faster times than the 815 hp Ford Mustang GTD’s 6:52.072 during a session on June 24.
The 1,064 hp Corvette ZR1 did it in 6:50.763 while the 1,250 hp all-wheel-drive hybrid Corvette ZR1X knocked a second and a half off of that with a 6:49.275 lap.
That makes the Corvette ZR1X the first American car to break the 6:50 barrier, while the Mustang GTD was the first to go under seven minutes.

Both Corvettes were equipped with ZTK performance package and ZR1 Carbon Fiber Aero Package, which adds a rear wing and other aerodynamic elements designed to generate up to 1,200 pounds of downforce at high speeds.

Chevrolet also brought a 670 hp Z06 with its similar Z07 performance package along to see what it could do and it put in a respectable 7:11.826 performance.

Chevrolet was proud to note that all of the drivers were engineers, rather than professional racing drivers, like Ford used, but they all have hundreds of laps of experience on the track known as The Green Hell.

The Corvettes are also a lot less expensive than the Mustang GTD, which has a starting price of $327,960. The Corvette ZR1’s base price is $175,195, while the Corvette ZR1X’s price will be announced closer to when it goes on sale late this year, but will likely be in the $205,000 range.

Nevertheless, there are still a few production cars that have gone faster than the Corvette ZR1X. The Nürburgring’s official list includes the Mercedes AMG GT Black Series at 06:48.047, the Porsche 911 GT2 R Manthey Performance Kit at 06:43.300 and the $2.7 million Mercedes-AMG One’s all-time record lap of 06:29.090.
