Ford’s ‘Millennium Falcon’ Electric Pickup Delayed To 2028 As It Focuses On Cheap EVs

Ford's New 'Millennium Falcon' Electric Pickup Plans Revealed?
Ford is working on a next-generation electric pickup truck that's launching in 2027 and a series of patents draw an interesting picture of what it may look like

Ford’s ‘Millennium Falcon’ is stuck in hyperspace. The automaker has delayed the launch of its next-generation electric full-size pickup from 2027 to 2028.

Its launch was originally slated for 2025, but has been pushed several times in response to market demands for electric trucks. Ford is also moving the debut of a new E-Transit electric commercial van from 2026 to 2028.

F-150 Lightning, America’s best-selling electric truck, and E-Transit continue to meet today’s customer needs,” the company told Reuters, also saying that it “will be nimble in adjusting our product launch timing to meet market needs and customer demand while targeting improved profitability.”

Images of the truck, known internally as T3 — named for “Trust The Truck” — have never been revealed, but Ford CEO Jim Farley once said that it looks like “like the Millennium Falcon with a back porch attached.”

A recent Ford patent filing uncovered by American Cars And Racing covering a front trunk storage space includes drawings of a truck with a blunt front end and raked windshield that look very different from Ford’s traditional trucks, but it may not reflect the design of the production T3.

Ford has a major electric vehicle announcement coming up on August 11 from Kentucky, where it is building a battery plant to supply its future electric vehicles, that will focus on a line of low-cost EVs that it has prioritized ahead of the full size truck and van. The project is based around a new electric vehicle platform that can accommodate a variety of vehicle types and is set to launch with a small pickup.

Ford last year cancelled plans for a very efficient three-row electric SUV as it announced it was shifting its efforts toward hybrid vehicles. That was before President Trump was reelected and made major changes to U.S. electric vehicle and emissions policies that reinvigorated the internal combustion engine vehicle industry.
