3-Row Tesla Model Y L Now On Sale In China — Will It Come To The U.S.?

The original Tesla Model Y was offered with three rows of seating, but the third row was pretty tight.
The head and legroom available made it mostly suitable for short passengers and child car seats, more like the second row in a two-door sports car.
When the updated Model Y was released this year, it didn’t even have the option, but that’s because Tesla had something else in mind.
It has now released the Tesla Model Y L in China, which is larger than the standard car and comes with three rows of two seats each.

The Model Y L has a six-inch longer wheelbase than the standard car and its roofline is reshaped to provide more headroom to the third row.

The second row of seats are power-operated captains chairs, and both rows can be folded flat to increase the cargo area. Air vents mounted to the roof rails are provided for both rows along with power outlets. The Model Y L also features a new seat design for the front two rows with very high backs and movable headrests integrated into them.

Tesla says the all-wheel-drive Model Y L can go 751 kilometers per charge, which is one kilometer more than the standard Model Y Long Range All-Wheel-Drive. That’s equivalent to around 466 miles, but the Chinese rating system is more generous than the EPA’s, which would be around 327 miles.

Pricing starts at $47,000 for the Model Y L, which compares to $43,700 for the Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive. A Model Y Long Range All-Wheel-Drive lists for $48,880 in the U.S., not including the delivery fee.

Tesla hasn’t confirmed plans to build or sell the Model Y L in the U.S., but the updated Model Y launched first in China before being offered in the U.S. The automaker has been working on a new low-cost version of the Model Y that’s expected to go on sale in the U.S. soon, along with the two-seat fully autonomous Cybercab that it says will be in production before the end of the year.
