Now that the IndyCar season is over, one of the mysteries about 2026 is where Colton Herta will be racing.

Rumors have started making the rounds that the 25-year-old Andretti Global driver is going to move to Formula 2 in order to earn enough points to get the FIA Super License required to race in Formula 1, with an eye on joining the new Cadillac Formula 1 Team in a future season.

TWG Motorsports holds ownership in both teams. Cadillac has confirmed Mexican Sergio Perez and Finn Valtteri Bottas as its drivers when the team launches in 2026, but hopes to have an American on the team in future seasons.

Herta wouldn’t comment on the talk in the days leading up to the IndyCar season finale in Nashville, in which he finished 11th behind winner Josef Newgarden, but posted a video announcement to social media after the race with the caption, “See ya in 2026.”

“All right, so I know there’s been a lot of rumors about what I’m going to do next year,” Herta said with a very serious delivery. “It’s been a long decision for me, a hard decision, and I finally made that decision. And, you know, I appreciate everything that has happened and all of the fans’ support for me this season, but this is going to be an exciting…”

And then the video cut to Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” in a classic internet Rickroll, which is apparently still a thing?

Herta finished the IndyCar season seventh in the standings with two DNFs, eight top 10’s and a best race result of third at Laguna Seca. He was second in the standings in 2024.

Even if he switches to F2, he won’t be the only American vying for a spot on the Cadillac team. Jak Crawford currently races in the series for the DAMS Lucas Oil team and sits second in the standings. He has already had talks with Cadillac and was a reserve driver for the Andretti Formula E team last season. Max Esterson is another American in F2, but he has not yet scored a point in the series.

It could be a while before the Herta situation is cleared up as the Formula 2 season has five races left and doesn’t wrap up until the Dec. 7, while IndyCar now enters a long break until the first race of the 2026 season in St. Petersburg on March. 1.

Also unknown is the fate of Team Penske’s Will Power, who does not have a contract with the team next year. Power finished the season ahead of his teammates, Scott McLaughlin and Newgarden, in ninth with a single win at Portland.
