Ram this week announced that it is canceling its planned full-size electric pickup, but it has a little treat on the way.

Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa has reconfirmed that a midsize Ram pickup will debut for 2027. The truck is slated to be built at the automaker’s Belvidere, Ill., factory and fill an empty spot in the lineup last held by the Dakota in 2011.

“I believe we have such a powerful pickup brand as Ram, we have all the ingredients to reach success in [the North American midsize pickup segment],” Filosa said at the recent Kepler Cheuvreux Autumn Conference in Paris.

He said he visited the design center in Michigan two weeks ago and saw a full size clay model of the truck. “It’s just beautiful, it’s amazing.”

Ram hasn’t revealed any images or specifications for the truck, but it will compete against vehicles like the Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado and Stellantis’ own Jeep Gladiator.

It also hasn’t confirmed if it will revive the Dakota name, but it will be using it on a new midsize Ram pickup for the South American market, which is based on a Fiat truck and not mechanically related to the new US-built vehicle.

While Ram hasn’t had a midsize pickup in its lineup for more than a decade, it had been addressing the entry-level price segment since 2019 by continuing to sell the last-generation Ram 1500 Classic as a budget offering alongside the latest Ram 1500.

Ram 1500 Classic production ended last year, however, and Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis said the only way it can sell a truck for less than $40,000 today is with a midsize model. The lowest-priced Ram 1500 is now a Tradesman work truck that lists for $40,275, not including destination fees.
