The Last Subaru Legacy Has Been Built In Indiana After 36 Years

It’s a car that has lived up to its name.
The Subaru Legacy was the brand’s first model built in the U.S. and set the stage for the automaker to become a mainstay of the market.
It launched in 1989 as a 1990 model and has been built through seven generations, spawning Subaru’s iconic Outback variant along the way.
The growth of the SUV segment that the Outback played a major role in has shifted American consumers away from sedans and wagons, however, and the Legacy has now been discontinued to make room for more SUV production.
The final Legacy rolled off of the assembly line in Indiana on Sept. 12 after more than 1.3 million were built. Subaru is bringing production of its popular Forester from Japan to the plant, where it will be manufactured alongside the Crosstrek and Ascent.

“This is a bittersweet moment for our company and our associates,” Scott Brand, president and chief operating officer of Subaru of Indiana Automotive said in a news release. “While an important chapter in our history has been brought to a close, we’re already turning the page and starting a new one.”

Earlier this summer, Subaru celebrated the six-millionth vehicle built at the Indiana facility, its only factory outside of Japan, and it was fittingly a Legacy.
“Our associates have every reason to take great pride in this achievement,” Brand said. “They’ve weathered a number of industry challenges in recent years with resilience, never losing sight of their commitment to excellence.”
A Subaru spokesman told American Cars And Racing a decision has not yet been made for the final destination of the last Legacy.
Indiana production of the standard Forester is scheduled to begin in October, while the Forester Hybrid will join it next spring.
