Then-Ford CEO Mark Fields in 2017 said the company would be launching a hybrid version of the Mustang and F-150 by 2020.

The F-150 Powerboost made it to market that year as a 2021 model, but the Mustang that arrived in showrooms with it was the all-electric Mustang Mach-E.

Ford dealers were reportedly told that year that a Mustang hybrid would be ready for 2025.

That’s not going to happen and there hasn’t been any official word of a Mustang hybrid since, aside from current CEO Jim Farley once saying that there will be a hybrid version of every Ford model by 2030.

Ford has canceled and dialed back several of its electrified vehicle programs since then and it’s not clear what direction the U.S. market is going to go in now that fuel efficiency regulations are being eased up and green vehicle subsidies cut.

Sources have now told Ford Authority that a Mustang hybrid is at least in development, if not necessarily close to going into production. Details on the powertrain are unknown, but a former Ford engineer noted on their LinkedIn page in 2021 that they had been working on both four-cylinder and V8-based hybrid technologies for the Mustang.

Ford teased what appeared to be a V8 hybrid powertrain in a video in 2018 and a patent filed in 2020 depicted one that incorporated electric motors into the sides of a V8 engine block which were used to power the front wheels in an all-wheel-drive setup.
