In a somewhat Ironic twist, Tesla chose the day that the federal EV tax credit program expired to launch its updated Model Y Performance in the USA.

The new top-of-the-line trim starts at $59,130 and is rated at 306 miles of range, which is up from the previous version’s 277 miles. The price would’ve qualified it for the credit.

It’s also quicker than the old one, with a 0-60 mph time that’s down .2 seconds to 3.3 seconds. The top speed remains restricted to 155 mph.

Updates include fresh exterior styling and a reengineered suspension with adaptive dampers with comfort and performance settings. A set of 21-inch wheels with Pirelli P Zero all-season tires is standard.

The Model Y Performance features heavily bolstered front seats with heating, ventilation and the Tesla Plaid logo in the backrest.

The 16-inch central touchscreen is slightly larger than the 15.6-inch version in other Model Y trims and the rear seat passengers get an eight-inch screen.

A towing package good for a 3,500-pound rating is standard and, unlike the other Model Y trims, six paint colors and the choice of a black or white interior are offered at no additional cost. The only functional option is the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system, which costs $8,000.

Interestingly, Tesla is not yet offering a lease or factory financing for the Model Y Performance, which is available for order now with deliveries slated to begin in December.

Tesla is expected to follow the Model Y Performance with the launch of a new entry level vehicle based on the Model Y before the end of this year.

It’s not yet clear if it will be sold under the Model Y name or a new one. Model Q has been rumored as a reference to short-sellers of Tesla stock who often tag their posts $TSLAQ, indicating their hope that the company goes bankrupt.

Elon Musk said in July that pre-production of the vehicle had already started, but did not announce a firm date for when it will be on sale or the exact price point.
