US-Built Nissan Xterra Coming In 2028 — Report

Nissan may be taking on the Toyota 4Runner, Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco in 2028 with an all-new Xterra SUV. The off-road vehicle was previously sold through two generations from 2000 to 2015.
Bloomberg reports thaty Nissan Americas chairman Christian Meunier said an all-new Xterra is in the works with a V6-based hybrid powertrain. A Nissan spokesman clarified to American Cars And Racing that, “at this time, we are considering the revival of the Xterra nameplate as a hybrid SUV, with a potential launch in 2028.”
It would built at Nissan’s Canton, Miss., factory alongside the next-generation Frontier and share components with the pickup. New body-on-frame Pathfinder and Infiniti QX60 SUVs could also be part of the program.
“The dealers are super excited about it because it’s going to be a great example of Nissan coming back,” Meunier told the outlet. He said the extra production scale will help bring costs down across all vehicles built at the plant.

They might include a more luxurious Infiniti-badged version of the Xterra, in the same way Toyota builds the similarly sized Land Cruiser and Lexus GX on the same platform.

Meunier said the company was also looking at moving Nissan Armada and Infinit QX80 production from Japan to the plant, which would eliminate the import tariffs to which they are currently subjected.

Nissan sold more than 750,000 Xterra’s during its original run. The final edition had a 261 hp 4.0-liter V6 and was offered with the choice of a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission.

Nissan has mentioned the possibility of an Xterra revival before and included what looked like the profile of one in a promotional video that was released in 2024.
