Time Capsule 1986 Buick Grand National With 8 Miles On The Odometer Sold For $115,500

Hopefully they enjoyed looking at it all these years.
A stock 1986 Buick Grand National with just eight miles showing on its odometer crossed the block at the Mecum Auctions Indy Fall Special event on Oct. 4 and was sold for $115,500.
The car was only registered for the first time six months ago and was put through a light refreshening that included a ice detail and laser rust removal.
According to Classic.com, it was the highest sale price for an unmodified Grand National for at least the past year. The original base price for the model was roughly $18,000.

The 1986 Grand National is powered by a turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 that is rated at 235 hp and 330 lb-ft. It was only available from the factory in black with a grey interior. Buick sold roughly 25,000 through 1987.

Buick also offered the limited edition GNX in 1987 which featured an updated version of the engine that was officially listed at 276 hp and 360 lb-ft, but known to produce much more than that.

Just 547 were built and have become highly sought-after collectibles. One with 8.7-miles on the odometer was sold on Bring A Trailer in September for $242,000, while someone paid $308,000 for a 568-mile car in 2022.

The all-time record is a lot higher than that, but a very special car holds it. The very last 1987 Grand National that was built before the model was discontinued was auctioned in 2022 for $550,000. The car had 33 miles on it and was signed by the team that built it, including Lloyd Reuss, who was the executive that spearheaded the Grand National program and was later president of GM, and his son Mark Reuss, who is GM president today.
