President Trump has announced plans to implement a new 25% tariff on imported medium duty and heavy duty trucks starting on Nov. 1.

Among the models set to be affected are popular pickups from Ram, GM and, starting next year, possibly Ford.

The tariff applies to all trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 10,000 pounds, which includes some full-size pickups and chassis cabs along with large vocational trucks and semis built by other automakers.

Ram and GM’s 3500-series trucks are often advertised as heavy duty, but are technically medium duty vehicles. Ram builds all of its HD models in Mexico while GM splits its Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD production between the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

Ford currently builds all of its trucks in the U.S., but last year announced plans last year to add F-Series Super Duty production in Canada in 2026, when it launches new hybrid-powered models. I has not confirmed what models it will build at the plant. The F-Series Super Duty is offered in F-250 trims that fall under the 10,000 GVWR limit, but are subject to the existing 25% tariff on light duty vehicles imported from Canada and Mexico.

Automakers are able to deduct the value of U.S.-built components from light duty vehicles assembled in Canada and Mexico, but the administration has yet to clarify if the same will apply to the medium and heavy duty models. The U.S., Canada and Mexico remain in negotiations regarding new trade deals that could further reduce existing tariffs.

GM has made adjustments to increase U.S. truck production and is adding a new Michigan truck factory next year that will allow it to avoid import tariffs.
