Don’t Look Now, But Cadillac Will Offer Eyes-Off Super Cruise Driving In 2028

GM’s Super Cruise is about to get a bit more super. The automaker has announced plans to launch an eyes-off version of the hands-free driving system in 2028.
Super Cruise can currently steer a vehicle within a lane, make automated passes in traffic and negotiate highway interchanges on hundreds of thousands of miles of U.S. highways, but requires the driver to be paying attention to the road ahead. A facial scanner ensures that their eyes are looking forward and not closed.
The upgraded version will add Lidar to the radars, cameras and GPS mapping already in use, which will allow for more advanced control. GM said it tapped some of the technology and expertise it absorbed from the Cruise fully autonomous vehicle division it disbanded last year.
“At the core is sensor fusion: the lidar, radar, and cameras build the perception layer; real-world driving data trains the decision-making model; and high-fidelity simulation validates performance across rare or hazardous scenarios. This provides a safe, reliable, and highly capable eyes-off autonomous system,” GM said in a news release.

GM says the driver will be able to read a book, check phone messages or watch a movie on the dashboard when the system is active, although these sorts of activities may not comply with current laws in many states, regardless of the capability of the system.

Turquoise lights will be installed on the side view mirrors to notify other drivers that the car is in this semi-autonomous mode and also on the dashboard so the driver knows when it is fully functional.

The system will debut on the Cadillac Escalade IQ when a new centralized computing platform launches. A rendering of the 2028 model shows the Lidar system installed in a pod above the center of the windshield.

GM claims that more that since it launched in 2017, Super Cruise has been used by its customers for more than 700 million combined miles of driving without being faulted for any accidents.
